Memories of A Midsummer Night's Dream in 1985
Philip Glass, who turns 75 today [January 31, 2012], is a remarkable composer and creative spirit. I first experienced his music at the superb Guthrie Theater production of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream directed by Liviu Ciulei in 1985. Selections from the composer's chamber suite Glassworks enveloped the visually stunning production in swirls of magical sound, creating a dramatic experience I'll never forget. I have treasured Glass's music ever since. His Violin Concerto and the opera Akhnaten were the greatest sources of musical healing energy during my long post-transplant hospitalization. Bravo Philip Glass! Bravo Guthrie Theater for decades of imaginative excellence!
