Since 1999, the Guthrie has hosted this special event to encourage children and young adults to make playgoing a lifelong activity. The Shakespeare Classic is designed to let young people ages 10-17 experience the powerful stories, poetry and imagination of William Shakespeare. Funded by contributions to the Sheila and Kenneth Livingston Education Fund, the Shakespeare Classic includes a matinee performance of the Guthrie's Shakespeare production, a specially prepared program for young people and a post-play party with the cast for photographs and refreshments. In 2001, the Star Tribune's Kim Ode wrote an article about the Livingston family before that year's Shakespeare Classic.

The 13th Annual Shakespeare Classic, for Much Ado About Nothing, was held on Sunday, October 30, 2011, at 1 p.m.
