Meet South Pacific Lighting Designer Justin Townsend. Not only is he a longtime friend and collaborator of Joe Haj (The Guthrie Theater's South Pacific is their seventh show together), but he's also lighting up Broadway.
Surprisingly, perhaps, the theater industry has been slow to diversify its workforce. The Guthrie’s new director of production David Stewart, a leader and mentor in the field of Diversity & Inclusion, explains how we got here and the Guthrie’s commitment to changing course.
For the past 17 years, the Guthrie has presented the Shakespeare Classic, a program that invites adults to bring a young person in their life to a William Shakespeare play for just $10. The program was created to introduce children and young adults to the work of Shakespeare and allow them to experience and connect with it in a personal and dynamic way.
Exciting things are happening in the Dowling Studio! The Guthrie Theater proudly welcomes the return of Mu Performing Arts, one of the nation's premier Asian American performing arts companies, to the Dowling Studio, located on the 9th floor of the Guthrie, for their production of playwright Mia Chung’s fantastical, humor-filled play, You for Me for You. We recently sat down with Randy Reyes, artistic director of Mu and the director of You for Me for You and grilled him with 9 questions covering everything from the future of Mu to the role of the Guthrie in Reyes’ theater career to “The Purple One.” Don’t miss You for Me for You playing now – March 6.
Falling in love isn’t always as romantic as Shakespeare put into words, but often the least predictable path to finding a significant other makes for the most enchanting stories. To celebrate Valentine’s Day at the Guthrie Theater, we connected with three married couples who all met through their work here to dish the dramatic details of their offstage romances.
Pro tip: consider Guthrie Theater tickets (Shakespeare’s Pericles, an adventure-filled romance, plays through Feb. 21) or shopping the Guthrie Store for the perfect Valentine’s Day gift!
This winter we’re thrilled to be partnering with Project SUCCESS, our
longstanding partner of 23 years (!), and Minneapolis Public Schools to
invite more than 2,000 students to see Shakespeare’s Pericles.
Project SUCCESS motivates and inspires students – nearly 12,000 in the
Twin Cities annually – to dream about their futures and helps them
create a plan to get there by giving them the tools and support they
need to achieve their goals. We can’t resist sharing their recent blog
post, which perfectly captures our joint adventure to Washington D.C.!
