We've revamped our classes to bring you more exciting offerings, with three distinct levels: EXPLORE (Beginner), CREATE (Intermediate) and COLLABORATE (Advanced).

Explore (Beginner)

 

Acting: Intro to Acting

If you've never tried acting or are looking to explore your natural talents, this class is perfect for you. Come play, exercise your imagination and learn new skills. No experience necessary. No prerequisite, Ages 18+, Capacity: 14 students

Voice/Acting: Intro to Voice & Speech

Do you want to be heard more clearly? To keep your listener engaged? To be more easily understood? Develop skills to become a more effective speaker. Through exercises, discussions, and practical application, participants will discover how to speak with a motivating, inspiring, and commanding voice. No prerequisite, Ages 18+, Capacity: 12 students

Intro to Theater: Structure, Language and Character

Through the lens of play analysis, this course will give students an understanding, appreciation and critical perception of theater in its many forms. Theatrical genres explored will include both contemporary work and classics, as students attend performances on all three of the Guthrie’s stages.

Professional Development: Presentation & Communication Skills 

Our bodies, faces and voices tell stories about who we are, communicating verbally and non-verbally in ways we don’t even realize. It’s time to take control of your story! Learn specific verbal and non-verbal skills that give you the confidence to be your best self and to respond in authentic, spontaneous and mindful ways. This on-your-feet class covers interviewing, presentation skills, meeting management and networking skills. No prerequisite, Ages 18+, Capacity: 14 students

Dance: SLAY! With Brian Bose

Join Guest Artist, Brian Bose to dance your way to empowerment with his SLAY workshop. Feel sexy, fierce and powerful while learning fun choreography and grooving to music. This class creates an open environment to explore your body, challenge yourself, and reconnect to your inner child. Strip away limiting fears and perfectionism and learn to get out of your own way so you have no choice but to SLAY. No dance experience necessary, Ages 18+, Capacity: 18 students.

Voiceover: Intro to Voiceover

Have you ever been curious about the world of radio and broadcast? Discover your vocal range and explore the necessary skills required to deliver the copy, impress the client, and sell the product. Learn the basics of choosing the right piece, reading commercial copy, and much more. No prerequisite, Ages 18+, Capacity: 12 students

Acting: Movement for the Actor

Action is embodied by the actor and rhythm, energy and form allow the actor to become another character. In this physical approach to acting, participants will explore physical awareness to create and explore different character archetypes and learn how rhythm and gesture can impact the creation of a character and the investigation of a scene. No prerequisite, Ages 18+, Capacity: 14 students

Create (Intermediate)

 

Voiceover 2: The Industry - 6 weeks

Serious about pursuing voiceover work? Learn all about audition etiquette, copy analysis, how to handle anxiety, and self-promotion from leading players in the industry. The class culminates with the opportunity to practice and record in the Guthrie's recording studio. (Previous guest speakers have included: Mike Stalcar, Engineer, Audio Ruckus Recording Studio; Holly Collison, Vocal Coach; and Kate Lawrence, Moore Creative). Pre-requisite: Voiceover 1 or its equivalent, Ages 18+, Capacity: 12 Students

Wednesdays, May 10 - June 14, 2017

Dance: Musical Theater

There is a reason actors strive to become what’s known as a "triple threat." The combination of acting, singing and dancing to communicate a story has made musicals a beloved and enduring theatrical form. Learn to connect your acting motivation to your movement. Develop your dance vocabulary, understanding of body placement, and sample a variety of dance styles from tap to jazz to ballet. Prerequisite: Dance 1 or its equivalent, Ages 18+, Capacity: 15 Students

Acting: Exploring the Text

All great actors have the ability to analyze a script to help them understand the circumstances of their character. In this course, participants will take a deep dive into the text of a classic and modern play, dissecting manuscripts into five concentrations: reason, time, locale, characters and language. Through this explorations, participants will leave with the skills to tackle any text, andto better prepare for an audition or role. Prerequisite: EXPLORE level acting or text classes, Acting: Creating a Character preferred, ages 18+, capacity: 12 students

Acting: Creating a Character

If you were bitten by the acting bug in the Intro to Acting, this next level is perfect for you! Continue your acting curiosity by building a strong foundation of skills. Strengthen your imagination, focus your concentration and hone your listening skills by delving into the creation of original and scripted characters. Prerequisite: EXPLORE level acting class such as Intro to Acting or its equivalent, ages 18+, capacity: 12 students.

Playwriting: Crafting a Scene

Have you imagined characters and been inspired to bring them to life on the page? What does it take to write an engaging scene and captivate an audience? Dive into valuable writing exercises, collaborate on staged readings of your work, and receive constructive feedback. Discover the key ingredients of a great drama or comedy and work toward creating your own short play. Prerequisite: Explore-level class or its equivalent, Ages 18+, Capacity: 12 Students

Acting: Auditioning and the Business of Acting

What makes a great monologue? What do casting directors look for? Focus on the skills and insight necessary to pursue a career in acting. This course will provide actors with tools to prepare for an audition including resume and headshot preparation, navigating talent agencies, and finding work. Prerequisite: EXPLORE level acting class such as Intro to Acting or its equivalent, ages 18+. Capacity: 12 students.

Voice/Acting: Dialects

Are you curious about dialects and accents? Learn the difference between dialects and accents, how to research and apply them to text, and when and why to sing in dialect. Explore Standard British and Cockney, and apply them to spoken text and song. Required materials: The Dialect Handbook by Ginny Kopf. Prerequisite: Voice & Speech 1 or its equivalent, Ages 18+, Capacity: 12 Students

Collaborate (Advanced)

Advanced Dance 3 - 8 weeks

If you’ve conquered the beginner and intermediate-level classes and are ready for a fun challenge, then this class is for you. Rush Benson and Shinah Brashears will cover multiple techniques and eras of dance, offering you a holistic studio experience that will do more than get you on your feet— it’ll have you dancing in the streets! Prerequisites: Dance 1 and 2, or their equivalent, Ages 18+, Capacity: 15 Students

Mondays, April 10 - June 5, 2017 (no class on Memorial Day) at 7-9 p.m.
Teaching Artist: Rush Benson and Shinah Brashears

7-8 p.m. with Shinah Brashears:
The first half of the class will focus on building the strength, flexibility and control to become a better dancer. The first half of class will also work on being able to pick up on a combination at a quicker pace and help improve performance quality.

8-9 p.m. with Rush Benson:
This portion of the class will involve a study of dance designed towards making an intelligent mover and dance partner. We will study the Elements of dance and dance composition and dancers will generate some of their own choreography and movement. We will also be studying partnering and community movement, such as weight sharing and counter balance.

Speaking Shakespeare - 8 weeks

What is it about the language in Shakespeare's plays that make them so musical? How do actors utilize heightened text to tell classic stories to modern audiences? These are the questions that will be answered in Speaking Shakespeare, an advanced-level voice and speech class with Mira Kehoe. Prerequisites: Explore and Create-level voice or text classes, or the equivalent, Ages 18+, Capacity: 12 Students

From Script to Stage - 8 weeks

How does a play go from the page to the stage? What does a playwright do to get their story told, and how do they decide who will help them tell it? Find out in this advanced-level class that will combine aspects of your previous text and acting classes and help you take the next step, from writing your ideas down on paper to realizing them onstage. Prerequisites: Playwriting, Exploring the Text, or their equivalent, Ages 18+, Capacity: 12 Students

Acting: Scene Study

Explore scenes from select plays in the Guthrie's current season, focusing on character development, crafting the story, and how to creatively engage within an artistic team. Delve into several roles while stretching your abilities and discovering new methods to approach scene work. Get your water bottle, pencil and movement clothes ready, actors! Prerequisites: Explore and Create-level Acting Classes, or the equivalent thereof, Ages 18+, Capacity: 12 Students

Wednesdays June 21 – July 26, 2017 (6 weeks) 6:30-9:30 p.m. REGISTER

Class Fee: $220 (plus a $3 handling fee)


Acting: Studio Intensive

This advanced-level scene studies class is tailored to the needs and goals of each student. Student will work intensively on one scene with one scene partner for eight weeks, with a keen focus on text and characterization. The final class will be an open session, during which students may invite family and friends to view their work. Prerequisites: Explore and Create level classes, and Scene Study, or permission of instructor by audition or interview, Ages 18+, Capacity: 12 students
