Future Leaders: Structure

While most resident theaters in the United States have an artistic director/managing director structure, the Guthrie functions in an entirely different way.

Guthrie Director Joe Dowling acts less like a "traditional" artistic director and much more like the Guthrie's CEO, overseeing not just the artistic mission of the theater, but its business as well.

There is no managing director at the Guthrie.

Instead, four senior managers report to Dowling - the directors of production, development, external relations and the chief administrative officer.

Each senior manager oversees different departments within the theater:

Dianne Brennan

Director of Development

Oversees the departments of

  • Individual giving
  • Major gifts
  • Corporate giving
  • Government and foundation giving

Jacques Brunswick

Chief Administrative Officer

Oversees the departments of

  • Finance
  • Information systems
  • Human resources
  • Company development
  • Facilities

Frank Butler

Director of Production

Oversees the departments of

  • Stage management
  • Sets and construction
  • Costumes, wigs and wardrobe
  • Lighting and electrics
  • Sound
  • Props

Trish Santini

Director of External Relations

Oversees the departments of

  • Marketing
  • Communications
  • Visitor services/front of house
  • Education
  • Box office
  • Building rentals/events
  • Guthrie Store
In addition to overseeing the four senior management members, Joe Dowling also oversees the literary and company development departments, which include the Guthrie/University of Minnesota B.F.A. Actor Training program and A Guthrie Experience for Actors in Training.
