Guthrie to screen 2010-11 season of acclaimed high-definition NT LIVE broadcasts

UPPER MIDWEST'S ONLY SCREENING SITE

(Minneapolis/St. Paul) The Guthrie Theater announced today that it will continue its participation in NT Live - an initiative by the UK's National Theatre to broadcast high-definition performances of its plays to more than 300 venues worldwide - as the Upper Midwest's only screening venue. Following the successful launch in June 2009 with the acclaimed production of Phèdre starring Helen Mirren, NT Live's first season was seen by over 150,000 people on 320 screens in 22 countries. Season two productions will include A Disappearing Number, Hamlet, FELA!, King Lear, Frankenstein and The Cherry Orchard.

Oscar winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) is returning to his theatre roots as part of the National Theatre's second season for 2010 with a new adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Boyle will make his debut at the respected venue directing Nick Dear's play as a "large-scale and theatrically and visually ambitious stage production."

Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard

with Zoë Wanamaker as Madame Ranevskaya
The Gaev family face bankruptcy and the loss of their estate. Even so, they refuse to sell their largest asset, their famous cherry orchard. The old world is giving way to the new, but the Gaevs seem not to have noticed the bewildering changes in the Russian way of life. The fate of the beautiful orchard becomes a symbol of the fate of all of the characters in this unassailable masterpiece.

"We couldn't have foreseen that the experimental NT Live season would be such a hit with audiences around the world, who are hungry to see our work," said National Theatre director Nicholas Hytner. "We're delighted that we can confidently build on its success with a second season of broadcasts."
