60-minute Plays for Actors in their 20s, available through Playscripts

Initiated in 2004 with the first graduating class of the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater B.F.A. Actor Training Program, this project gives the B.F.A. senior class the chance to perform new plays penned by some of the nation’s most gifted playwrights. Each spring, several playwrights are chosen to travel to Minneapolis and spend time getting to know the students. They return in the fall with a draft of a new play — containing characters written specifically for the young actors. The students participate in several readings of the work as the script is refined, and then the plays are produced in March–April as the final performance project of the seniors’ undergraduate program. In addition to encouraging the creation of compelling new plays for college-age actors, this project provides the B.F.A. students with a rewarding challenge as they prepare to originate roles in a premiere production, participating in an ongoing conversation with a living playwright as the script develops. This unique experience helps to introduce students to how the process of working on a new play differs from modern or classical work, and is another avenue through which the Guthrie supports the careers of talented playwrights with commissions and productions.

One-Act Plays for Teenage Actors, available through Playscripts

As part of its education and new play programs, the Guthrie commissions Minnesota playwrights to write works for teenage actors to perform. This program offers teenagers plays that address the issues in their lives as well as an opportunity to participate in the creation of a new work by a Minnesota playwright. The Guthrie has partnered with The Children's Theatre Company, The Playwrights' Center, Commonweal Theatre Company and five high schools to commission and develop these plays. The plays are written to comply with the guidelines of the Minnesota State High School League One-Act Play Festival.
