Purpose
An internship in the Guthrie Costume Shop is on-the-job training. The intern should be seriously considering a career in costume construction or design. Work will be accomplished under staff supervision and will consist of participating in the completion of costume items for use in a Guthrie production.
Prerequisites
Basic costume construction skills are prerequisite to acceptance into the internship program. The greatest benefit will come if the applicant is already firmly based in sewing techniques and ability to use the hands. There is not time to teach basic sewing skills. Stitching may be the largest proportion of tasks to be accomplished. Your work at the Guthrie will help to develop these skills to the professional, high quality level required in the professional theater.
What to Expect
Costume Shop internships are available in the following areas:
- Costume Construction
- Millinery
- Painting and Dyeing
- Wig Making and Maintenance
- Costume Shop Management
- Costume Design Assistant
The time should be planned for one area of specialization rather than a smattering of time in various disciplines.
Time Commitment
The Costume Shop work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:30a.m. to 5 p.m. Interns are expected to put in the same hours as the rest of the staff. Generally a stay for a whole season is preferred in order to be exposed to different designer approaches and resultant varying construction techniques. A minimum stay of three months is essential.
