Directing

Purpose

An internship in directing provides the opportunity for observation of a professional director and exposure to the process of a production in a professional not-for-profit theater.

Prerequisites

A Guthrie Directing Internship is a professional experience for early career applicants with pertinent training and experience. In addition to the internship application and recommendations, an extensive telephone interview may be required.

What to Expect

The responsibilities of a directing intern are entirely dependent upon the wishes and needs of the production's director; therefore, the nature of each experience may vary widely. Directing Interns begin their assignment on (or before) the first rehearsal date of the production and the commitment then continues through the understudy rehearsals or opening performance. The period of time may vary from about five weeks to three months, depending upon the production schedule.

Time Commitment

The daily commitment is full-time. The rehearsal day is typically 8 to 10 hours a day, six days a week. Mondays are the customary day off. Responsibilities might also include meetings and duties outside of the rehearsal hours. The position is unpaid and does not include housing.
