Technical Production

Purpose

An internship in Technical Production will give you the opportunity to explore the various aspects of theater production by working with professional technicians, and using a variety of materials and techniques. Interns should have an interest in making some aspect of technical theater or theatrical design their profession.

Prerequisites

It is expected that the basic skills in theater technical production have been learned and practiced prior to an internship with the Guthrie. For the most rewarding experience, you should be familiar with a working shop atmosphere and have a basic understanding of power tools, construction techniques, welding and electrics. Any special skills such as casting, sound, hydraulics or sewing should be mentioned in the related skills section of your application.

What to Expect

The technical department is involved in scenery, lighting, and sound, hard props, soft props and special projects. The given production, the production schedule and the intern's area of interest determine intern assignments. The success of an internship in this department depends on the intern's desire to learn and use initiative in creative problem solving.

Time Commitment

As an intern you will work approximately the same hours as the professional staff. A minimum stay of two to three months is suggested.
