Assistant Technical Director

Job Title: Assistant Technical Director

Status: Annual full time, exempt

Position Purpose:
The Assistant Technical Director is responsible for assisting the Technical Director in the preparation and organization of technical information pertaining to the scenery of any given production, through collaboration with the design team and the other production departments, working from knowledge of standard theatrical technical design.

Key Result Areas:

  • Collaborate with the design team and other production departments to establish methods for the design and execution of the scenery and/or other elements of productions.
  • Prepare and organize the technical information pertaining to the scenery for specific productions so that the productions can be built, installed and struck by staff in a timely, safe and cost efficient manner.
  • Communicate the technical information to shop staff members and other departments so the productions can be built and installed in a timely, safe, and cost-efficient manner.
  • Organize and prepare information for daily maintenance of the scene shop and theatrical venues.
  • Manage the personnel in the scene shop to promote a safe, healthy and productive work environment for shop staff.

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree with 2 or more years of experience, or a combination of equivalent experience and training.
  • Driver’s license required.
  • Knowledge of construction drafting techniques to create drawings used by carpenters for scenic construction.
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of construction materials commonly used in the theater to implement technical designs.
  • Knowledge of standard theatrical scenic construction methods.
  • Knowledge of basic rigging, hydraulics, pneumatics, and theatrical automation.
  • Knowledge of simple engineering and structures to use in technical designs.
  • Knowledge of safe working practices to promote and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Skill in manipulating AutoCAD drawings so drafted archival information can be referenced.
  • Skills in carpentry, welding, rigging, and sewing to draw upon when engineering technical designs.
  • Skill in preparing budgets and labor estimates to keep projects within an acceptable scope.
  • Skill in word processing and database preparation for information review, organization and communication.
  • Ability to draft construction drawings to support between 8 and 15 carpenters on a daily basis.
  • Ability to delegate tasks to keep the flow of work moving forward.
  • Ability to lead and/or supervise crews to get work done efficiently and safely.
  • Ability to solve unexpected problems quickly to get work done efficiently and safely.
  • Ability to research an unknown process or material so it may be applied to a technical solution for a scenic element.
  • Ability to spend approximately 50% of time on the computer or engaged in other tasks involving repetitive motion.
