Happy Days

Happy Days
February 14 - March 08, 2009 (Opening February 18)
Dowling Studio
A masterful blend of humor and compassion, Happy Days represents one of Samuel Beckett's finest works. In this production longtime Guthrie favorite Sally Wingert, who delivered an exceptional turn as professor Laurie Jameson in last season’s Third, and has delighted thousands of theatergoers as Mrs. Cratchit in A Christmas Carol – makes her Dowling Studio debut as Winnie. A woman of about fifty, Winnie is strangely embedded in a mound of earth throughout the entire play, though able to pick up everyday objects nearby: a mirror, her eyeglasses, a toothbrush and toothpaste. While she comments, laughs, babbles and groans, Willie – played by Guthrie veteran Richard Ooms – lives life on all fours, replying only occasionally to Winnie's cheerful chatter. And although Winnie’s predicament is never explained, she manages to get through life clinging to arbitrary routines and rituals, and relying on Willie as a source of comfort, ever hopeful that ‘this is going to be a happy day.’ Don’t miss these legendary Guthrie artists in this extraordinary play and intimate setting.
