The Amen Corner

May 05 - June 17, 2012 on the Wurtele Thrust Stage

Run Time: 3 hours 5 minutes including one intermission

The Twin Cities’ own Greta Oglesby returns to the Guthrie thrust stage for the first time since her groundbreaking portrayal in Caroline, or Change — a performance critics hailed as “pitch-perfect,” “brilliant,” and the “performance of a lifetime” — to play the charismatic Sister Margaret Alexander in James Baldwin’s inspiring play with music. The fiery and unfaltering Sister Margaret, leader of a devoted congregation in Harlem, has dedicated years of her life to serving the Lord. But when her son unexpectedly reunites her with her estranged husband, a jazz musician, she risks losing her standing in the church and the son she has tried to keep on a religious path. Produced by Penumbra Theatre Company and directed by Penumbra’s founder and artistic director Lou Bellamy, The Amen Corner features music by a nine-member gospel choir from Minneapolis’ Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. Don’t miss this exultant, soul-stirring masterpiece about earthly imperfection and the connection between faith and family.
