Director of the Guthrie, Joe has directed countless productions on its stages since his arrival in 1995. Among them is his critically acclaimed production and tour MIDSUMMER, as well as audience favorites such as THE HOME PLACE, THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, THE GLASS MENAGERIE, THE REAL THING, HAMLET, HIS GIRL FRIDAY, AS YOU LIKE IT, DEATH OF A SALESMAN, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, OTHELLO, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, THREE SISTERS, ALL MY SONS, AMADEUS, THE INVENTION OF LOVE, TWELFTH NIGHT, THE PLOUGH AND THE STARS, THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL among others. In addition, his directorial credits include productions at Dublin's Gate Theatre, Arena Stage, The Shakespeare Theatre, The Public Theater, The Acting Company, American Repertory Theatre, Stratford Festival, Roundabout Theatre Company and Geffen Playhouse, among numerous others. This marks his eighth production of MIDSUMMER.

There’s no doubt Frank has experience designing magical forests. In addition to the Guthrie’s 1997 production and tour of MIDSUMMER, Frank designed this season’s memorable forest setting for Brian Friel’s THE HOME PLACE, also directed by Dowling. The award-winning designer has created countless other designs that remain favorites among Guthrie audiences today, including THE PLOUGH AND THE STARS, THE SCHOOL FOR SCANDAL, SWEENEY TODD, THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST, A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY, MOLLY SWEENEY, and the PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD.. A native of Ireland, Frank served as full-time scenic designer for Dublin’s Abbey Theatre for five years, and has designed widely in Ireland, Great Britain and internationally. He has spent the last seven years painting full-time, with exhibits mainly in Ireland and Spain.

Paul has over 14 years of experience designing costumes and has designed extensively in the United States and internationally for theater, dance and opera. In addition to his design for the 1997 production and tour of MIDSUMMER, Paul's Guthrie credits include: THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, HAMLET, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, THREE SISTERS, AMADEUS, BLOOD WEDDING, THE DARKER FACE OF THE EARTH, JULIUS CAESAR, BLITHE SPIRIT AND BIG WHITE FOG. FOR BROADWAY HE DESIGNED THE COLOR PURPLE, ELAINE STRITCH AT LIBERTY, CAROLINE, OR CHANGE, A RAISIN IN THE SUN, DROWNING CROW, DEF POETRY JAM, BRING IN DA NOISE BRING IN DA FUNK, ON THE TOWN and Gershwin's FASCINATING RHYTHM. Paul also has extensive credits Off-Broadway, regionally and has won numerous awards for his work, including the Lucille Lortel, two Helen Hayes Awards, a Michael Merrit Award and the AUDELCO Award.

Jane has several Guthrie credits on her resume including last season's unforgettable production of THE GLASS MENAGERIE, ROMEO AND JULIET, SIX DEGREES OF SEPERATION, and THIEF RIVER. Jane also spends time designing productions in New York City, including the Broadway productions of DAME EDNA: BACK WITH A VENGANCE and COME BACK LITTLE SHEBA. Off-Broadway her credits include: 100 SAINTS YOU SHOULD KNOW, DORIS TO DARLENE, MEMORY HOUSE, and WILDER at Playwrights Horizons; THE BLACK EYED at New York Theatre Workshop; IN THE BLOOD and IN DARFUR at The Public Theater; and SEVEN GUITARS, URBAN ZULU MAMBO and ENTER THE NIGHT at Signature Theatre Company. Jane has worked regionally at acclaimed theaters such as Long Wharf, McCarter, Seattle Repertory, Denver Center, Arena Stage, Children's Theatre Co, and Center Stage, among others, and has also designing lighting for dance and opera.

In addition to composing the music for the Guthrie's 1997 production and tour of A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, Keith composed music for the play a total of seven times before the production this spring, and all but one were directed by Joe Dowling. Keith has composed original music for several other productions at the Guthrie including THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, THREE SISTERS, JULIUS CAESAR, MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING and THE CHERRY ORCHARD. He has also composed for the Shakespeare Theatre, the Gate Theatre in Dublin and countless classics for the Stratford Festival, including ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL, THE COMEDY OF ERRORS, HENRY IV PART 1, CYMBELINE, TROILUS AND CRESSIDA, TWO NOBLE KINSMEN, AS YOU LIKE IT, THE ALCHEMIST and THE MIRACLE WORKER. Keith's credits also include nine years as a stage and television actor.

Scott has stayed busy at the Guthrie working on JANE EYRE, PEER GYNT, A CHRISTMAS CAROL (12 productions since 1996), 1776, THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, THE GLASS MENAGERIE, LOST IN YONKERS, THE GREAT GATSBY and HAMLET, among countless other productions. His other credits include work with Dublin Theatre Festival, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Children's Theatre Company, Jungle Theater, Penumbra Theatre Company, Mixed Blood Theatre, Illusion Theater, Ballet of the Dolls and the Minnesota Opera. Scott has worked as production manager and live sound engineer for Garrison Keillor's A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION. To top it off he's added several awards to his resume including the Minneapolis STAR TRIBUNE's award for Outstanding Sound Designer in 2003 for PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and in 2004 for THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, as well as a Helen Hayes Award nomination for YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU at Arena Stage.

Marcela became Movement Director for the Guthrie in 1991, and has since coached more than 100 plays. She is also Head of Movement for the University of Minnesota/Guthrie BFA Actor Training program. Marcela has choreographed over 20 plays at the Guthrie and has directed/choreographed productions nationally and internationally, for renowned theaters such as Mixed Blood Theater, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Washington Shakespeare Theater, Goodman Theater, Brooklyn Academy of Music, National Actor's Theater in New York, Signature Theater, Long Wharf Theater and the Juilliard School. Marcela has taught at NYU, Juilliard, Shakespeare Theater, US conferences, the London International School of Performing Arts and the Guthrie Experience for Actors in Training. This summer she will direct THE SECRET FALL OF CONSTANE WILDE on the proscenium stage and a new play for Guthrie Experience to be performed in the studio.

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM is full of aerial effects and with more than 350 professional credits under his belt, including the Guthrie's last production of MIDSUMMER, who better than John to lead the action this spring? John has been the fight director for several Guthrie productions including THE GREAT GATSBY, HAMLET, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, and MANY COLORS MAKE THE THUNDER-KING. Additional credits include his role as master instructor with the Academy of Dramatic Combat; 18 seasons with Stratford Festival of Canada; as well as work with the Shaw Festival, Soulpepper Theatre, CanStage, National Ballet, Elgin Theatre, Manitoba Theatre Centre, National Arts Centre, The Shakespeare Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Ahmanson Theatre, Geva Theatre Center and Lincoln Center. His experience exceeds the stage as he has also coordinated action sequences for more than 100 films and has directed television series and feature films.

Michael has been a Guthrie dramaturg since 1981, working on countless productions including, recently, THE HOME PLACE, THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, LOST IN YONKERS, PEN, and A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM (also in 1985 and 1997). He is the recipient of the Lessing Award for lifetime achievement in dramaturgy and has been teaching at the University of Minnesota Department of Theatre Arts and Dance. You may be wondering ... what exactly is a dramaturg? Lupu describes the work as analyzing and preparing the text for rehearsal - the starting point of the interpretation in performance. Dramaturgy was called the "conscience" of a theater production. The dramaturg does a better job if able to keep a critical eye on the creative process. Lupu says that although no one ever blames the dramaturg if a play fails, nor does he get much credit in case of a success.

In the event of a Shakespeare production, Andrew Wade is the first name that comes to mind for voice and language consultation. At the Guthrie he has coached actors in THE MERCHANT OF VENICE, HAMLET, AS YOU LIKE IT, OTHELLO, THE COMEDY OF ERRORS, and ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA. Andrew was the head of voice for the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1990-2003 and assistant voice director from 1987-1990. He has traveled extensively, lecturing, leading master classes and workshops, as well as coaching theater companies and actors in Australia, Belgium, Colombia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, India, Ireland, Japan, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, South Africa, Sweden, Singapore, Switzerland and throughout the US. One of his numerous credits includes his role as verse consultant for the Academy Award-winning film SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE.

This is Russell's second time working on A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM. He has been the Production Stage Manager for many Guthrie favorites such as this past fall's THE HOME PLACE, as well as LOST IN YONKERS, HAMLET, INTIMATE APPAREL, SHE LOVES ME, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, THE CANTERBURY TALES, WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?, TO FOOL THE EYE, A CHRISTMAS CAROL, YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU, THE TEMPEST, and TWELFTH NIGHT among others. He has worked as the assistant stage manager for the Broadway production of August Wilson's THE PIANO LESSON and as the technical director/production stage manager for New York Harlem Production's European Tour of PORGY AND BESS. Aside from Russell's stage work, he is also the voice of the Guthrie's escalator, lobby and theater announcements alerting you when to take your seat and that no flash photography is allowed in the theater. Some have described his talent as "Big Brother-esq."

This is Sarah's second time as an assistant director at the Guthrie; her first was last summer's smash hit 1776. Prior to this role, Sarah served as dramaturg for the workshops of THE SECOND BEAM, THE ATOMIC ADVENTURES OF NIKOLAI NIKOLAEVICH, and IN DARKNESS, as director of the workshop of GOVERNING ALICE, and as a Guthrie literary associate from 2002 to 2003. She has directed productions such as MURDERS for Cincinnati Playhouse, EDUCATING RITA for Torch Theater, CHOPSTICKS, BANDAIDS AND JOHNNY UNITAS, REVELATIONS OF MANN, and HUSH HUSH for the History Theatre, KID SIMPLE: A RADIO PLAY IN THE FLESH for Emigrant Theater, COYOTE FENCE for Theatre in the Round, and MINNESOTA! IT'S NOT JUST FOR LUTHERANS ANYMORE! among others. In addition, Sarah has directed more than 30 national and regional commercials.

Michele is another behind-the-scenes Guthrie staple. Michele has proudly Stage Managed for PEN, PRIVATE LIVES & PERICLES and was Assistant Stage Manager on PEER GYNT, MAJOR BARBARA, THE GLASS MENAGERIE, LOST IN YONKERS, THE GREAT GATSBY, THE CONSTANT WIFE, A BODY OF WATER, DEATH OF A SALESMAN, OTHELLO, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, and MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG just to name a few. Michele also has toured with MOLLY SWEENEY, AH WILDERNESS and OTHELLO. Outside of the Guthrie, Michele has worked as Assistant Stage Manager for The Acting Company's productions of THE THREE MUSKETEERS, MACBETH and THE LOTTERY, the Contemporary American Theatre Festival's THIEF RIVER and THE LATE HENRY MOSS among others. Michele, more affectionately known as "Coco" around the Guthrie for her love and devotion to hot chocolate, is a trusty blogger for our own Big Blue Blog. Joel's list of experiences is definitely unique, with professional training ranging from stage combat, fencing, Tae Kwon Do and flying trapeze work to scuba diving, skydiving, archery and wilderness kayaking. MIDSUMMER is his second production at the Guthrie; his first was PIRATES OF PENZANCE. Joel has worked as fight choreographer for the Canadian Opera Company, Actors Studio of Canada, Tarragon Theatre, Waterloo University, Hamilton Urban Theatre, Factory Theatre, Tivoli Theatre, and Lincoln Center Theater, to name a few. His film credits include more than two dozen feature films as a stunt performer as well as fight choreographer, including ALL THE GOOD ONES ARE MARRIED, SONNY BY DAWN and TIME OF THE WOLF. Joel also teaches combat workshops at the Hamilton Opera Company, Waterloo University, Stanford Conservatory, and the Waterloo Young Theatre.
