He is the recipient of the Lessing Award for lifetime achievement in dramaturgy and has been teaching at the University of Minnesota Department of Theatre Arts and Dance. You may be wondering ... what exactly is a dramaturg? Lupu describes the work as analyzing and preparing the text for rehearsal - the starting point of the interpretation in performance. Dramaturgy was called the "conscience" of a theater production. The dramaturg does a better job if able to keep a critical eye on the creative process. Lupu says that although no one ever blames the dramaturg if a play fails, nor does he get much credit in case of a success.
