Joe Dowling's leap of 'Faith'

Finances have gotten so tight at the Guthrie that Joe Dowling has had to cast himself as an actor. "Yes, soon we'll do all one-man shows and I will run back and forth to every theater," Dowling said, playing along with the gag during an interview. In a more serious vein, he said he wants Twin Cities actors to know he has no intention of taking work away from them. He's particularly sensitive because the Guthrie is hiring fewer actors in this down-budget year.

In October 1998, gay college student Matthew Shepard was tortured and beaten, then left for dead by two men he had met in a bar near Laramie, Wyo. Shepard's death six days later made Laramie a synonym for violent intolerance and put a national spotlight on hate crime.

Former artistic director Douglas Campbell has died

The entire Guthrie family is saddened by the death Douglas Campbell, who served as this theater's artistic director during the 1966 and 1967 seasons. Douglas died in Montreal Oct. 6, 2009 of congestive heart disease at age 87.
