NEW ARRIVALS!

Handmade Ceramics Imported from Afghanistan

A limited selection of Istalif ceramics was hand-picked for the Guthrie Store in celebration of The Great Game: Afghanistan. Sales of these pieces benefit artists working in a potters community in the village of Istalif, located near Kabul. The artists seek to restore traditional crafts techniques by using locally sourced clay and historic design motifs.

Featured Items!

Artist: Jalai Laiel
Item: Guthrie Lamp

Two months before the grand opening of the Guthrie's current building, artist Jalai Laiel was asked to create a candle for the tables in the theater's then-main restaurant Cue to enhance the dining lighting. When Ms. Laiel first saw the space, it was full of scaffolding, paint and unfinished tile work, but she was shown a picture of what the finished restaurant would look like. Her design needed to brighten the tables and fit into architect Jean Nouvel's general design concept for the building.

As part of her process, Ms. Laiel read about the history of the Guthrie Theater and was particularly taken by the life of Sir Tyrone Guthrie and his vision. She had an incredible dream in which Guthrie and his wife showed her a beautiful oil candle and explained what it meant. She awoke at 4 a.m. and immediately drew the candle she'd seen in her dream:

The Guthrie Lamp is in the shape of a flame. The cut top represents the male while the hourglass center represents the female. The lighting of each candle represents both the love between Guthrie and his wife and the eternal flame of the creative spark that passes from generation to generation.

The candles can still be seen in the current restaurant Sea Change.
