As part of the Guthrie New Play Program, 11 writers were presented with the opportunity to conduct research anywhere in the world for an experience that would fuel the creation of a new play. Three years after Julie Marie Myatt began her journey, her play Boats on a River will be the first of these plays to receive a world premiere.
Boats on a River is an unflinching look into the world of sex-trafficking in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, through the eyes of Western aid workers at a rescue shelter. Poignant, smart, and at times humorous, the play renders these characters fully human as they attempt to help the young girls whose innocence has been sold to paying customers.
