Kids know how to enjoy the Bard -- imagination first, everything else second

Sheila Livingston thinks children can understand Shakespeare just as well as adults - if not better.

"When kids are young, they don't know that Shakespeare is serious or scholarly," says Livingston, a longtime education director at the Guthrie Theater. "It's become something people study, but kids just come into the performance and enjoy it. They don't have all these preconceptions."

Livingston is the creator of the Shakespeare Classic, a one-time performance of the Guthrie's annual Shakespeare play performed just for kids and their families. Next Sunday's matinee of "The Two Gentlemen of Verona" marks the family program's 10th anniversary.
