First show you saw at the Guthrie?
Hmm. That's a tough one. I wasn't very well-versed in theatre as a youngster, but I know I came to see Julius Caesar in 2000 or 2001 with my high school. I think that was my first Guthrie show.
First show you were in at the Guthrie?
I had the pleasure of being in 1776 last summer, which was an amazing experience. Everybody involved was so kind and wonderful, and I'm glad it was my first Guthrie acting experience.
First show you were ever in?
I was in a 50's-era production of Cinderella at my school that was put on by a traveling children's theatre company in which I played Maynard, a nerdy boyfriend of one of the step-sisters. I was in 2nd grade, and I knew I wanted to be an actor from that moment on.
What's the best advice you've received from a fellow actor?
Probably to trust my instincts.
What's the worst advice you've ever received from a fellow actor?
Never trust your instincts?
Cue or Target Lounge?
Oh, I'm a fan of the Target Lounge. It's less crowded. And I feel like a special person when I'm there. Not that I don't feel special at Cue or anything. Because the last thing I want to do is offend Cue. Not my intention.
What is always in your dressing room?
My costumes. Other than that, I don't have specific things that are always there. I suppose if I get little opening night letters or pictures or gifts from people, they stay there through the run, but I don't tend to bring things of mine from other shows. I probably should start doing that, because I always like when other actors have their traditions.
Favorite place at the Guthrie?
Well, I'm a fan of the Hub on the 3rd floor, because it has internet and really comfortable couches. But I'm always a fan of hanging out with the wig/wardrobe people on the 2nd floor.
Where else do you go to see theater in the Twin Cities?
This probably a bad thing to admit, but I don't get out to as much theatre as I'd like to. Maybe it's because I've been in several shows and haven't had much time to see other shows, but that's not the whole truth. But theaters that I've attended in the past have been the Children's Theatre Company, Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, the Ordway, Mixed Blood Theater, Illusion Theater, Park Square, various Fringe shows, and I'm sure others that I can't think of.
What's your dream role?
I don't know if I have a dream role. I'm a musical theatre guy at heart, and I really enjoyed playing Bud Frump in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying in high school, and Toby in Sweeney Todd in college. But other than that, I don't really know. Is that weird?
Is there a local actor you haven't worked with, but want to?
Hmm. Well, I've really enjoyed Sarah Agnew and Stacia Rice in things I've seen them in. And although I'm technically in Midsummer with them, pretty much all the Mechanicals are hilarious, and I'd love to be in a show with any of them where we actually have scenes together.
Favorite movie?
Oh dear. Well, first of all, I LOVE the Muppets, so pretty much any Muppet movie. But I was sort of obsessed with Hook as a child for some reason. Don't ask me why. It still holds a special place in my heart. Oh, and Jurassic Park.
What's the last book you read?
I just read Wicked, which is vastly different than the musical it was turned into. It was a very interesting book.
What's on your iPod?
Ha, I don't even own an iPod. I think that's a sin for my generation. But if I had one, I believe the correct answer would be "music."
Relationship status?
What an oddly personal question, Guthrie. Well, I'm single if anybody really wants to know. But not for long, once this questionnaire gets put on the website, I'm sure.
If you could have dinner with any playwright, living or dead, who would it be?
I think it would be really interesting to talk to Shakespeare or some really old playwright. I'd give them an update on what's been happening in the world.
Best State Fair food?
Even though I felt like I wanted to throw up afterward, I had a deep-fried candy bar. It was crazy. I also like corn dogs.
Ever been arrested?
17 times. Minus 17. All for prostitution.
What's your drag name?
Is this different than my porn star name? My first pet and my mom's maiden name? So I guess it would be Mitzi Stoll? My Soap Opera name (middle name and street where I grew up) would be Allen Morningside, which I think it pretty spectacular.
What's the most cringe-inducing thing you've ever said or done in front of Joe Dowling?
I guess I haven't really had that much time with Joe Dowling, but I'm sure I felt like everything I did was embarrassing. I was pretending to make-out of with one of the computers in the Hub when John Miller-Stephany walked by. That was pretty cringe-worthy. John, I'm not attracted to computers, in case you were wondering.
Any place in town where you're considered a "regular"?
Besides prison? My parents' house. Maybe Applebees (half-price appetizers!)? I'm not a huge drinker, so no bars. And Subway. All of them. Oh, and Noodles and Co. Yum.
Dogs or cats?
I have a precious dog named Ivory who is turning 14 in May, and he's a Samoyed, which is a big fluffy white dog. Sort of like an all-white Husky. I wuv him. Just like Lysander wuvs Hermia (at least at the beginning and end of the show). See how I tied the show in? Yep. I'm THAT clever. I like cats too. I just don't own any.
Shaw or Chekov?
Who? Just kidding. I've never performed either, but I think I've liked Chekov shows in the past.
Boxers or briefs?
Really? This is the last question? Odd. Well, I like both. I like the feeling of security that I get with briefs, but I like the look of boxers. So I wear both. The End.
