Soak up the fun

Guthrie camps and intensives offer kids and teens the opportunity to work alongside professional theater artists to explore and develop their skills as artists and creative thinkers. These fun and impactful experiences will inspire positive self-development and community leadership by connecting participants to the artistry and creative process at one of the nation’s leading theaters. Middle school and high school camps will feature workshops with a variety of skilled teaching artists and focus on a wide range of artistry.

Location

All camps will take place inside and around the Guthrie Theater at 818 South 2nd Street, Minneapolis, MN 55415.

Cost

Weeklong camps are $457. Two-week camps are $907. All pricing includes a $7 handling fee. Buy one camp and get $10 off additional camps.

Scholarships

We are committed to providing accessible programming for all. A limited number of full and partial scholarships are available on a first-come, first-served basis. To request financial assistance, please apply for a scholarship. Applications are due by April 13, 2025.

Cancellation policy

Summer camp registrations canceled before May 1 will receive a full refund. Cancellations on or after May 1 will receive a credit toward future camps, classes or tickets.

For all other education programming, registrations canceled more than 30 days before the program's first day will receive a full refund. Cancellations within 30 days will receive a credit toward future camps, classes or tickets.

Guthrie Education makes every effort to run programming as advertised but reserves the right to change or cancel programming at any time. Impacted registrants will receive notice as soon as possible and be issued a full refund or credit on account.

Ready to take the next step in your acting career? This intensive camp will prime you for the profession through in-depth concentration on your craft. Challenge yourself with arigorous week of scene study, physical training and one-on-one vocal coaching. As a bonus, you’ll get real-world experience in a mock audition with the Guthrie’s Resident Casting Director and Associate Producer.

Play games in three dimensions, create on the spot and make ’em laugh in this active, fast-paced introduction to improv. You’ll start with the foundations and build on those ideas with your scene partners — going further together than you ever could alone. Overcome stage fright and release any fear of failure as you explore the realm of infinite possibility in a supportive ensemble environment. At the end of the week, you’llperformin a fun showcase for family and friends akin to Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Get ready to showcase your musical theater skills! You’ll build technique through workshops in contemporary text, song, movement and acting. At the end of the week, step into the spotlight and share your talents with family and friends in our Theatermakers Cabaret, featuring hits from jukebox musicals such as Mamma Mia!, Moulin Rouge!, & Juliet and Head Over Heels.

As Maria says in The Sound of Music, the beginning is “a very good place to start.” In this entry-level camp, you’ll be introduced to the fundamentals of musical theater: singing, acting and dancing. Through master classes and vocal and physical exercises, you’ll gain (or improve) the skills needed to perform your best in musical theater. Tip: This camp will prepare you to excel in our Musical Theater Workshop:The SpongeBob Musical (July 21 –August 1).

Get ready to smash your next audition! During this three-day intensive, you’ll work with a local casting director to learn valuable audition techniques while gaining practical deliverables, including classic and contemporary monologue selections tailored to you. Whether you’re hoping to audition for colleges or local productions, you’ll come away from this camp with greater confidence and be ready to shine.

Are you eager to learn new slapstick gags or polish up your pratfall? This is the camp for you! You’ll be guided through the basics of clowning and the art of character-oriented physical comedy. Join your fellow actors (or general goofs) in becoming a more generous, playful and genuine performer. Tip: This camp develops essential skills you can refine in our Staging a Mystery camp (August 4–15).

Experience the glitz and glamor of live musical theater as you take on the most iconic characters from the Disney songbook. You’ll gain an understanding of the fundamentals of musical theater through master classes in singing, acting and character development. At the end of the week, dazzle your friends and family in a showcase of your favorite Disney hits!

Make up hilarious characters and situations, play generative games and use your creativity in this active, fast-paced introduction to improv. You’ll practice the foundations of improv and build inventive storylines with scene partners, plus learn to think on your feet, make bold choices and crack up your new friends in a supportive ensemble. At the end of the week, you’ll perform in a fun showcase for family and friends like you're on Whose Line Is It Anyway?

How does an actor create a character? In this foundational camp, you’ll invent and play while creating and embodying characters. You’ll learn to make strong choices through stage presence, active listening and engaged body movement, plus develop your physical acting skills through master classes in mask work and physical theater techniques. Tip: This camp develops essential skills you can refine in our Staging a Mystery camp (August 4–15).

Musical theater aficionados: Get ready for some deep-sea fun with all your favorites from Bikini Bottom! You’ll work with industry professionals to develop skills in singing, acting, dance and character development through rehearsals and master classes. The entire experience builds to a The Spongebob Musical showcase. This camp will collaborate with the Exploring Stage Craft camp, offering an opportunity to see how creative elements can enhance your onstage storytelling.

July 21 – August 1

Interested in a theater career behind the scenes? Get ready for a two-week dive into stage craft techniques. Learn from the pros in the Guthrie’s shops as you explore scenic design, carpentry, costumes, props, lights, sound and projections. Then develop your own designs and put your skills to the test as you work together to build a three-dimensional experience. This camp will collaborate with the Musical Theater Workshop camp, offering an opportunity to design and construct delightfully playful elements for The SpongeBob Musical showcase.

July 21 – August 1

Put on your headset and get ready to G-O in this hands-on camp for stage managers. Boost your skills in interpersonal communication, collaboration, organization and document design, which will set you up to manage any style of live performance. Then learn how to run a production efficiently and professionally by supporting the development of The SpongeBob Musical showcase.

Immerse yourself in Shakespeare’s beloved tragedy of star-crossed love: Romeo and Juliet! This camp is perfect for those who are new to Shakespeare as well as those ready to take the next step in their text work. You’ll learn how to read, understand and perform heightened language, plus gain confidence in speaking classical text. At the end of camp, you’ll participate in a performance for invited guests.

Get ready for some mysterious mayhem! Build your clowning and character acting skills with scenes from The 39 Steps, Broadway’s longest-running comedy! Based on Alfred Hitchcock’s iconic movie, this piece is full of wacky characters in outrageously mysterious situations. At the end of camp, you’ll perform scenes from the play for invited guests. Tip: While awesome as a standalone experience, this camp is also an ideal pairing with the Devising a Character or Clowning camps.
