2017 Summer Camps 

Become a member of our cast! 

Our weeklong, full-day camps are designed to spark the imaginations of young people entering grades 3-12, through theater games, music, movement and storytelling. No experience is needed to join the fun!

Allow your young one’s imagination to run wild! Students will explore the building blocks of live theater through music, movement and storytelling. This half-day, weeklong camp promises to inspire, delight and entertain – building a foundation for a lifetime of creativity.

Experience the excitement of acting, singing and dancing for the stage! Campers will learn the basics of musical theater, including acting through song, choreography and combining music and movement to tell a story. This engaging course will have campers singing and dancing all week long.

Comedy: Make 'Em Laugh

July 10 - 14, 2017

In this weeklong workshop, students will explore physical comedy as a starting place for character development and creation. This fun and highly physical class studies comedy fundamentals such as sight gags, mask work, clowning, stage combat and more.   

 

Puppetry: Party with Puppets

July 17 - 21, 2017

Discover the art of shadow puppetry and rod puppets while creating worlds and characters out of ordinary objects. Campers will learn basic puppetry techniques, how to build puppets and scenery, and create original mini-plays to be shared at the end of the week.

 

Acting and Storytelling: Act It Out

July 24 - 28, 2017

In this practical and engaging weeklong experience, young performers will discover acting techniques and explore character development while cultivating their skills and passion for the stage. Using popular tales, plays and books as inspiration, campers will collaborate in creating.




Shakespeare: From Page to Stage

Learn to bring Shakespeare’s masterpieces to life through this weeklong course all about the Bard. Students will work with professional teaching artists to study movement, vocal exercises, methods for understanding the text, and strategies for staging his work in a dynamic and engaging way.  

 

Directing: Idea to Stage

In this exciting camp, young theater makers will have the opportunity to learn different processes and techniques of directing for the stage. Led by professional theater directors, students will cultivate the tools to develop a concept, form a creative team and ensemble of performers, and navigate the different stages of the rehearsal process.

 

Musical Theater: Storytelling through Song and Dance

July 17 - 21, 2017

Immerse yourself in all aspects of theater through training in singing, dance and acting. Campers will develop the confidence and bold techniques required for larger-than-life productions, and collaborate on creating original scores.

 

Tech: All Things Technical

July 24 - 28, 2017

Through hands-on instruction, explore the technical areas of our world-class theater. Guthrie artists and staff will demonstrate how the pieces of the puzzle come together – from hearing a designer’s vision to seeing it realized on the stage. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the inner workings of the Guthrie.   


Summer Intensive: Creating from Scratch

July 24 - 28, 2017

Learn what it takes to work as an ensemble of artists to direct, perform, write and design a short play. Focusing on the collaborative process, a Guthrie teaching artist will help the students conceive a project and work together to stage a final showing. This camp is perfect for up-and-coming theater makers who have participated in a summer camp or have prior experience in design, performance, writing, or directing.
