Youth Classes & Workshops
Our virtual classes and workshops for youth entering grades 7–12 are a perfect way for theater-loving kids and teens to spend their no-school days. Whether you want to build on existing skills or try something new, your summer is about to get super fun and all-out awesome.
All offerings are virtual, and no experience is necessary — just come as you are!

Entering grades 7–9
WORKSHOP: STAGE COMBAT (Grades 6–12)
Have you ever wondered how onstage fighting looks so real? Join us for a fun and physical workshop of staged punching, slapping and falling taught by a professional teaching artist in the Twin Cities. You’ll explore the elements that must come together to keep a fight scene safe for everyone onstage while learning the tricks needed to create the illusion.

WORKSHOP: SLAY!
Feel confident, fierce and powerful while learning fun choreography, grooving to music and dancing your way to empowerment. This one-day workshop creates an open environment to get your cardio up, move your body and challenge yourself. Do away with fears and perfectionism while learning how to get out of your own way so you have no choice but to slay all day! No prerequisite or dance experience required. Capacity: 30 participants.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: ACTING THROUGH SONG
Focus on connecting movement and voice to the emotional arc of a character through song. You’ll explore audition sides (song excerpts) from popular musical theater ballads, break down the text and learn musical techniques to help you form fully developed characters and effectively communicate a story onstage through song. No prerequisite. Capacity: 10 participants.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: YOUNG ACTORS INTENSIVE
Are you ready to enter the world of professional theater? In this four-day intensive, you’ll dive into the art of acting through the study of character development and scene work, all while being empowered to find your personal approach to building strong and engaging characters. No prerequisite. Capacity: 12 participants.

MIDDLE SCHOOL: AUDITION READY
You’ve taken acting classes and built your skill set. So what’s next? It’s time to get onstage! Learn what it takes to land a role in this all-things audition class. Focusing on one monologue, you’ll explore character creation, the audition process and tips to help you enter the audition room with confidence and have a blast showing them what you’ve got! No prerequisite. Capacity: 12 participants.
Bring a monologue of your choice (60‒90 seconds) to the first class.

HIGH SCHOOL: THE ACTOR’S TOOLKIT
Working in collaboration with a professional theater artist, you’ll develop a foundational acting practice by focusing on voice, movement and scene study while being introduced to the professional and creative practices of the Guthrie. No prerequisite. Capacity: 12 participants.

HIGH SCHOOL: TRIPLE THREAT TOOLKIT
Build your skill set by growing the key foundations of acting, singing and dancing. Led by talented theater artists who have worked on stages across the Twin Cities and beyond, this fun, engaging class will teach you what it takes to be a real triple threat! No prerequisite. Capacity: 12 participants.

Gabrielle Dominique (she/her) is a South Minneapolis native and graduate of St. Olaf College where she earned bachelor’s degrees in Theater and Dance. She works as a performing and teaching artist in the Twin Cities and has recently performed at the Guthrie Theater (South Pacific, A Christmas Carol, Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story, Guys and Dolls), the Ordway (West Side Story, Cabaret Series: Gotta Dance!), Minnesota Opera (Flight), Chanhassen Dinner Theatres (Mamma Mia!), Jungle Theater (Ride the Cyclone), Children’s Theatre Company (I Come From Arizona), Theater Latté Da’s 2017 NEXT Festival, Artistry Theater and Visual Arts (Oklahoma!, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas), Stuart Pimsler Dance & Theater (Terra Incognita, Twin Cities premiere) and Flying Foot Forum (Cookaphony). She has been a company member with St. Paul’s Wonderlust Productions since spring 2018 and was featured in its recent production of Our House: The Capitol Play Project and the “Overachievers” web series. When Dominique isn’t onstage, she works as a freelance teaching artist and choreographer. She especially loves working with theater students at Spring Lake Park School District 16, Anoka Middle School for the Arts and SOAR Regional Arts of St. Michael. She can’t wait to meet you and start dancing with you. Her motto (for life, as well as dance) is “When in doubt, right is right.”
Max Wojtanowicz (he/him) is a performer, playwright and educator based in the Twin Cities. He has taught acting, musical theater and audition prep at St. Olaf College, Yellow Tree Theatre, Guthrie Theater, St. Cloud Civic Center, Plymouth Playshop and Southeastern Summer Theatre Institute. He currently serves as an educator and evaluator for Spotlight Education with Hennepin Theatre Trust and enjoys sharing his love of musical theater. Learn more at www.maxwojtanowicz.com.
WORKSHOP: ACTING FOR FILM
Lights, camera, action! If you want to expand your talent beyond the stage, this workshop will explore acting techniques for film and compare the similarities and differences when acting for stage or camera. You’ll also receive feedback on a filmed monologue you’ll submit prior to the second session. No prerequisite. Capacity: 10 participants.

Nail your next audition with this intensive for young actors! You’ll master a monologue of your choice while learning how to create a self-taped audition for theater or B.F.A. programs, read sides (script excerpts) during an audition and effectively take direction on the fly. This six-session class will culminate in a mock audition with feedback from a local director. No prerequisite. Capacity: 10 participants.

H. Adam Harris (he/him) is an actor, director, teaching artist and cultural equity consultant who works at the intersection of theater, education, social justice and community engagement. He recently directed the regional premiere of Redwood by Brittany K. Allen at the Jungle Theater. Harris is the Education Coordinator at the Playwrights’ Center, a resident teaching artist with the Guthrie Theater and Children’s Theatre Company, a board member at Ten Thousand Things, and a freelance equity, diversity and inclusion consultant for various organizations.
WORKSHOP: IMPROV
Learn how to create scenes and characters at the drop of hat by playing fun games in an environment of trust. In this one-day workshop, you’ll learn the art of comedic timing, getting comfortable onstage and coming up with a story in a matter of seconds. All you have to do is say “Yes, and!” No prerequisite. Capacity: 12 participants.
