THE GUTHRIE THEATER, IN CO-PRODUCTION WITH BERKELEY REPERTORY THEATRE, PRESENTS

Metamorphoses

based on the myths of OVID
written and directed by MARY ZIMMERMAN
from the translation by DAVID R. SLAVITT

A visually stunning masterpiece

In what’s considered her signature theatrical piece, once hailed as “the theater event of the year” (Time), Tony Award-winning director and playwright Mary Zimmerman juxtaposes the ancient and the contemporary in a ravishing theatricalization of Roman poet Ovid’s powerful masterwork, Metamorphoses. Performed in and around a large pool of water, an ensemble of actors embodies figures from Greek mythology to share both well-known and rarely told stories of transformation.

Three things to know

  • Metamorphoses debuted on Broadway in 2002 and earned Zimmerman a Tony Award for Best Director. Several cast members from the original Broadway production are reprising their roles at the Guthrie.
  • This production marks the Guthrie’s first-ever “splash zone” — a few seats near the onstage pool where theatergoers may get their feet wet.
  • No knowledge of Ovid or his poetry is required to be captivated by this imaginative retelling of his ancient stories.

“The Guthrie has used water features in the past. But an onstage pool where actors hop in and out, their clothes and hair wringing wet? That’s a new one.”
