Destiny of Desire

A switched-at-birth comedy

On a blustery night in Bellarica, Mexico, two babies enter the world. The poor Hortencia welcomes a strong, healthy girl while the affluent Fabiola discovers her daughter has a weak heart — a cross the beauty queen refuses to bear. So she devises a scheme to swap the newborns (cue dramatic sound effects). In true telenovela fashion, the daughters meet 18 years later and become fast friends. Through over-the-top musical numbers and plot twists galore, their long-buried past comes to light and upends everyone’s lives in hilarious, melodramatic ways.

Three things to know

  • Karen Zacarías is currently one of the most produced playwrights in the U.S. Her works include an adaptation of How the Garcia Girls Lost Their AccentsThe Book Club PlayMariela in the Desert and The Sins of Sor Juana, which won the 2000 Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play.
  • Destiny of Desire premiered at Arena Stage in 2015 and went on to be produced at Goodman Theatre, South Coast Repertory and Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Each production was directed by José Luis Valenzuela, artistic director of Latino Theater Company in Los Angeles, who will also direct the Guthrie production. The Los Angeles Times called it a “terrifically entertaining theatrical roller-coaster” and “a zany, funny delight.”
  • In 2017, the Guthrie produced Zacarías’ acclaimed comedy Native Gardens, which also played on the proscenium.
