Steel Magnolias

directed by LISA ROTHE

McGuire Proscenium Stage

A tenderhearted favorite

Truvy’s salon is Chinquapin, Louisiana’s go-to place for a beauty fix with a hearty side of gossip. Along with her overeager assistant Annelle, Truvy pampers her small-town clients with hairdos, manicures and all kinds of unsolicited advice. Anybody who’s anybody is a regular: There’s the doting M’Lynn and her soon-to-be-married daughter Shelby, the moody Ouiser and the well-to-do widow Clairee. Through witty banter and wisecracks, this hodgepodge group of women form friendships as strong as steel, which they are forced to lean on when tragedy strikes.

Three things to know

  • Steel Magnolias was a play before it was a movie. After its off-Broadway premiere in 1987, playwright Robert Harling wrote the screenplay for the 1989 film starring Olympia Dukakis, Sally Field, Daryl Hannah, Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton and Julia Roberts.
  • Harling based Steel Magnolias on the life of his sister and their experience growing up in Natchitoches, Louisiana.
  • Inspired by the play’s all-female cast, our production features a female director and an all-female design team.

Post-play discussions

Our community partnerships for Steel Magnolias focus on the themes of hair, salons, survivorship, and human rights. Truvy’s salon is a gathering place, but it’s also so much more. The women of Steel Magnolias take refuge there as they move through the joys and sorrows of life. Through our post-play conversations for Steel Magnolias, we will celebrate people who live these themes in our own Twin Cities communities by featuring special guests from Curl Power, Beauty Lounge, Alpha Kappa Alpha, The Aliveness Project, and The Advocates for Human Rights.

Truvy says there’s no such thing as natural beauty. But knowing this cast, we (politely) disagree.
