A Christmas Carol

by CHARLES DICKENS
adapted by LAVINA JADHWANI
directed by JOSEPH HAJ
Wurtele Thrust Stage

A timeless holiday tradition

A miserly and miserable man, Ebenezer Scrooge greets each Christmas with “Bah! Humbug!” until he is visited one Christmas Eve by the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present and Christmas Future. In Charles Dickens’ beloved classic, the three spirits show Scrooge happy memories from his past, difficult realities from the present and a grim future should he continue his closed-hearted ways. Throughout his journey, Scrooge is forced to reckon with the man he has become and contemplate the man he could be — but only if his restless night leads to a change of heart by morning. Artistic Director Joseph Haj returns to direct this heartwarming holiday tradition for all ages.

Three things to know

  • Our 48th annual production will repeat last season’s adaptation by Lavina Jadhwani. Faithful to the Dickens tale, her adaptation carefully tracks Scrooge’s journey to redemption to mark the moments when Scrooge becomes a willing participant in his own change of heart, from the tears he sheds upon seeing his boyhood school to the fear that Death will claim him before he can make good on his resolution to change.
  • In 2021, the Guthrie invested in a new physical production of the family favorite, including new scenic, costume, prop, lighting and sound designs. For the 2022 production, various set pieces and various tech elements will be completed and the creative design will be fully realized.
  • Budget conscious? Attend a performance early in the run to enjoy greater savings. Tickets start at $20 for preview performances (Nov. 12–17). For detailed pricing, see the ticket prices section below.

In the news

Building a better Christmas Carol

In 2021, we introduced a new adaptation of A Christmas Carol by Lavina Jadhwani along with all new design elements. However, due to supply-chain issues, we were unable to fulfill our full artistic vision.

This year, various set pieces and technical elements are complete, and Scrooge returns with a fully realized set and artistic vision.
