Illuminate Campaign

A campaign for the Guthrie’s future

For over sixty years, the Guthrie has created transformative theater that ignites imagination, opens minds and builds community. Today, the Illuminate Campaign defines our next chapter — a future where artists and audiences connect through inspiring experiences. Just as Minnesotans once rallied to establish the Guthrie and later build our landmark home on the Mississippi, we now ask our community to rally again.

With a goal of raising $80 million, Illuminate will make targeted investments in Artistic Excellence, Guest Experience and our Endowment, to ensure the Guthrie remains a vibrant, welcoming, and artistically dynamic destination for generations to come.

“The Illuminate Campaign ensures we can maintain the creative vision for this extraordinary theater — elevating our artistry and filling our stages with the most visionary, innovative and ambitious productions year after year.”

Joseph Haj, Artistic Director

Campaign pillars

Artistic Excellence

We believe artistic excellence begins with fearless innovation and the courage to tell new stories while reimagining timeless ones. The Guthrie thrives when artists have the freedom to be bold and explore uncharted forms of expression and storytelling. Illuminate gives us the ability to dream big and fully realize our artistic vision.

We are investing $30 million to sustain artistic excellence, produce ambitious works, develop new voices and nurture future theater makers. This commitment ensures the Guthrie remains a source of inspiration for generations to come.

Guest Experience and Capital

When the Guthrie opened its riverfront home in 2006, Time magazine hailed it as “a 21st-century dream factory.” Nearly two decades later, that dream continues to inspire audiences from around the world. In June 2026, we’ll celebrate the 20th anniversary of this iconic landmark — a cornerstone of Minneapolis’ cultural identity and a catalyst for transforming the Mill District into a vibrant neighborhood of parks, businesses and residences.

To keep pace with evolving needs and expectations, we must reinvest in our dream factory’s infrastructure and public spaces to ensure an exceptional guest experience, both on and off the stage. A $30 million investment in essential capital repairs and improvements will create inviting spaces where our community feels welcome and engaged.

Funding the Future

To remain strong in a changing world, artistically vibrant theaters like the Guthrie need reliable resources to grow and thrive. Two key strategies make this possible: a healthy endowment and estate gifts through the Guthrie Heritage Society (GHS). These investments make it possible to keep ticket prices accessible for patrons of all means, pursue programming that reflects our artistic ambition and maintain a financial foundation that safeguards our mission.

By raising $20 million, we will strengthen permanent endowed funding that generates nearly $1 million annually and grows with inflation in perpetuity. This dependable support, combined with generous gifts through the GHS, empowers our artists and staff to plan with confidence and share the transformative power of live theater for generations to come.

Why now

In a rapidly changing world, the Guthrie remains a vital space where artistic voices ignite imagination, spark conversation and unite communities. Illuminate is our bold step forward, ensuring the Guthrie stays vibrant, industry-leading and fiscally strong. The $80 million raised through Illuminate will be invested in visionary artists, innovative productions and capital projects that define our legacy, engage the community and shape the future of live performance. Together, we can keep the lights shining bright and secure a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
