Our history

The Guthrie Theater was founded by Sir Tyrone Guthrie in 1963 and is dedicated to producing the great works of dramatic literature, developing the work of contemporary playwrights and cultivating the next generation of theater artists. Under the artistic leadership of Joseph Haj, the Guthrie produces a mix of classic and contemporary plays on three stages, and continues to set a national standard for excellence in theatrical production and performance.

Artists at work

To accompany our three world-class performance spaces, we house state-of-the-art backstage areas where our full-time production staff builds our shows from the ground up. In addition to having all the production trades in one building, we are in the rare position of having the preeminent talent within each trade working onsite. Lighting designers, costume designers, set designers, sound engineers, wig makers – our craftspeople are on par with the world’s great performing arts centers.
