Welcome to the Guthrie

The Guthrie Theater is an American center for theater performance in Minneapolis, Minnesota, dedicated to producing a mix of classic and contemporary plays and cultivating the next generation of theater artists. Under the current leadership of Artistic Director Joseph Haj, the Guthrie is guided by four core values: Artistic Excellence; Community; Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility; and Fiscal Responsibility.

Since its founding in 1963, the theater has continued to set a national standard for excellence in the field and serve the people of Minnesota as a vital cultural resource. The Guthrie houses three state-of-the-art stages, production facilities, classrooms and public spaces.

The Guthrie is one of the world's truly great theater facilities, and it is an honor to continue the legacy and mission of the artistic directors who have gone before me. Creating exceptional theater for the community we serve is a privilege and welcome responsibility. Every day, I am amazed by the artmaking, dedication and collaboration that happens both on and off the stage.

The Guthrie Theater engages exceptional theater artists in the exploration of both classic and contemporary plays, connecting the community we serve to one another and to the world. Through its extraordinary artists, staff and facility, the Guthrie is committed to the people of Minnesota and, from its place rooted deeply in the Twin Cities, influences the field as a leading 21st-century arts organization.

Vision
The Guthrie Theater creates transformative theater experiences that ignite the imagination, stir the heart, open the mind and build community through the illumination of our common humanity.

Land acknowledgment

The Guthrie would like to acknowledge that we gather on the traditional land of the Dakota People and honor with gratitude the land itself and the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations, including the Ojibwe and other Indigenous nations.

OUR HISTORY

Hamlet 1963

From Broadway to the mighty Mississippi

The Guthrie Theater opened on May 7, 1963, with a production of Hamlet directed by Sir Tyrone Guthrie, the theater’s founder. In June 2006, the Guthrie moved from its original home on Vineland Place to the banks of the Mississippi River.

Over the past 60 years, the Guthrie's mission and committment to artistic excellence have remained constant, and we continue to create transformative theater for the Twin Cities community, the state of Minnesota and beyond.
