First-Timer’s Guide
Welcome to the Guthrie. We’re glad you’re here.
If you’re new to the Guthrie or the theater, we can’t wait for you to see a show on our stages. This guide is designed with first-timers in mind so you know what to expect during your visit, from parking tips to theater etiquette and everything in between.
If you’ve been to a performance at another performing arts venue, you’ll notice some similarities, but with a Guthrie-specific spin. Here are some helpful tips to ensure your debut visit is a great one.
FAQ
We recommend arriving at least 30 minutes before the performance so you have time to park and enjoy the views before you take your seat. Insider tip: Arrive even earlier to shop the Guthrie Store or explore our popular spaces like the Endless Bridge and the Amber Box to enjoy stunning city views before the show.
We understand that life happens, but arriving on time is appreciated. Not only does it ensure you don't miss an onstage moment, it helps everyone in the audience have a more enjoyable experience. If you arrive after the show begins, you will be admitted during a break in the action to help keep distractions to a minimum. In some cases, you may be seated in an alternate location inside the theater.
If you have any questions, please see an usher for assistance.
The closest option is the city-owned Riverfront Ramp on South 2nd Street directly across from the Guthrie, and the standard event parking rate is $15. Limited metered and street parking is also available.

Come as you are and be yourself — there is no dress code at the Guthrie. Some patrons enjoy dressing up while others prefer to keep it casual. It’s truly up to you. We also ask that you refrain from wearing strong perfumes, colognes or lotions to be mindful of patrons seated near you with allergies or sensitivities to aromas.
We keep our theaters on the cooler side to help ensure actors stay comfortable onstage and theatrical equipment operates correctly. Because temperatures vary, we recommend bringing an extra layer so you stay comfortable in the audience.
The Guthrie offers a variety of sips and bites for purchase in our lobbies before the show and during intermission. You are welcome to bring beverages into the theater, but we ask that you enjoy snacks in the lobby before you take your seat.
