The history behind the name

When the original Guthrie Theater opened on Vineland Place in 1964, musicians played a fanfare on herald trumpets before each showtime. Today, we play a recording of that signature fanfare to announce when a performance is about to begin. This musical tradition is echoed in our annual gala name, which celebrates the Guthrie’s legacy and the excitement of live theater.
