Photo & Video Policy

Guthrie Building from Gold Medal Park in the summer time.

The Guthrie Theater is open to the public, and guests are welcome to take photos and film videos while following the guidelines below.

Inside the theaters

While photographing actors onstage is not allowed at any time, taking photos of the set is allowed pre-show, post-show and during intermission. If you post to social media, we encourage you to tag @GuthrieTheater and include the scenic and lighting designers listed on the credits page in the play program. Video or audio capture of any performance is strictly prohibited. The Guthrie reserves the right to request disruptive patrons leave the theater at any time.

Personal and noncommercial photography

Our public spaces may be used free of charge for personal and noncommercial use (e.g., portraits, weddings) with the following restrictions:

  • Guests taking group photos are encouraged to contact the Guthrie in advance at 612.225.6000 (Stage Door) or [email protected] so we can confirm the time and area requested will be in alignment with the guidelines in this policy and ensure all guests enjoy their time at the Guthrie.
  • Guests and photographers may not block off or take over public spaces or entire lobby areas in a way that prohibits or deters other guests from enjoying our public spaces.
  • Photography must not interfere with Guthrie events or pre-show activity in the lobbies.
  • For the convenience and safety of our guests and audiences, photography must end one hour before showtime. Please check the performance schedule at guthrietheater.org before scheduling your session.
  • Photographers must be self-contained with no additional or freestanding equipment (e.g., tripods, lights, electrical cords).
  • Moving furniture and climbing in or on the window boxes is strictly prohibited.
  • Personal and noncommercial photography may not be published, sold or otherwise distributed for commercial purposes.

Commercial photography

All commercial photography requiring a crew and professional equipment (e.g., advertising, architectural and fashion photography, filmmakers, production companies) generally requires 30-day notice. Applicable fees will be determined on a case-by-case basis. To inquire about using the theater for an upcoming project, please email [email protected].

NOTE: The Guthrie reserves the right to terminate any photography or filming on the theater’s property deemed inappropriate or intrusive.
