A cherished holiday tradition

Each Christmas, the miserly and miserable Ebenezer Scrooge greets the holiday with “Bah! Humbug!” and can’t be bothered to celebrate. One Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited by three spirits who show him happy memories from his past, difficult realities from the present and a grim future should he continue his closed-hearted ways. Throughout his journey, Scrooge is forced to reckon with the man he has become and contemplate the man he could be — but only if his restless night leads to a change of heart by morning. Filled with hope and festivity, the Guthrie’s cherished holiday tradition continues to bring joy to theatergoers of all ages.

Three things to know

Faithful to the Dickens tale, Lavina Jadhwani's adaptation carefully tracks the moments when Scrooge becomes a willing participant in his own transformation, from the nostalgia of seeing his boyhood school to the fear that Death will claim him before he can act on his change of heart.
In 2021, the Guthrie invested in a new physical production of this family favorite, including new scenic, costume, prop, lighting and sound designs. These details continue to be updated and amplified every year.

Ticket prices

Tickets range from $35 to $148. Children (5–17) save $10 per ticket in Areas 1 and 1A and 50% per ticket in Areas 2–4. Excludes tickets $25 or less and select performances.

Age recommendation

We recommend A Christmas Carol for ages 8 and up. Everyone must have a ticket, and children under 5 are not admitted.

Relaxed performance

The Guthrie will offer a relaxed performance of A Christmas Carol on Sunday, November 30 at 4 p.m. Although these performances are open to all patrons, they are intentionally modified to accommodate patrons with sensory and vestibular sensitivities, anxiety, dementia, autism spectrum disorders, learning differences or challenges attending the theater.

Fezziwig’s Holiday Party

Mr. Fezziwig knows how to throw a festive bash, so we’re transforming the Target Lounge on Level Four into a family-friendly pop-up bar sponsored by Suntory Global Spirits and Maverick Beverage Company. Featuring seasonal sips and snacks with a holiday twist, show-inspired decor and more, it’s a perfect way to put some fa-la-la in your step. Bar service will begin 90 minutes before showtime and be available through intermission. Cheers!

Festive fun for all ages

Join us for Spirit Week as we celebrate the Guthrie’s 51st production of A Christmas Carol! From November 11 to 15, you’re invited to participate in daily festivities as we launch our favorite holiday tradition. Depending on the day, you’ll enjoy exclusive giveaways, ticket discounts, family-friendly activities and opportunities to give back to the community. Gather your loved ones, get in the holiday spirit and help us make this season extra bright.

Spirit Week schedule

Inspired by the theme of giving in A Christmas Carol, we’re kicking off Spirit Week with a curbside food drive to help those in need this holiday season. On Tuesday, November 11, drive up to the Guthrie between 7 and 9 a.m. and drop off nonperishable goods that we’ll donate to Every Meal — a local nonprofit working to end child hunger.

Bonus: The first 50 drive-by donors will receive a coupon to purchase two tickets for $50* to one of the following performances of A Christmas Carol:

Friday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m. 
Saturday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m.

Please check the dates on your donation to make sure none of the food has expired.

Fruits: Pineapple, peaches, mangoes, pears, applesauce, mandarin oranges, prunes/raisins
Vegetables: Carrots, corn, mixed veggies, green beans, peas, bamboo shoots, baby corn 
Entrees: Chili, chicken noodle soup, pasta sauce, mac and cheese, ravioli, enchilada sauce, chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, diced chiles, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, fava beans, curry soup, coconut milk, curry paste, tomato soup

Ring in the holiday season with a nightcap at the Guthrie before the evening performance of A Christmas Carol on Wednesday, November 12. Stop by our festive pop-up bar, Fezziwig’s Holiday Party, on Level Four or visit our lobby bars to purchase a winter-inspired specialty cocktail (naughty or nice) that pairs perfectly with the show, all while enjoying jazzy sounds of the season by the Ryan Garmoe Trio. All ticket holders will receive a free winter cap embroidered with Scrooge’s most iconic line: Humbug!

If you are a lucky winner, we will notify you by email on Tuesday, November 11 and announce the winning artwork on our social channels on Thursday, November 13.

Ten winners will receive a festive gift from the Guthrie, plus have their artwork displayed in the Guthrie lobby throughout the run. One grand prize winner will receive a four-pack of complimentary tickets to see A Christmas Carol on Saturday, November 22 at 1 p.m.

What’s today? Why, it’s Opening Night of A Christmas Carol! Join us on Friday, November 14 at 7:30 p.m. as we celebrate the Guthrie’s 51st production of the Charles Dickens classic. You’ll be surrounded by holiday cheer from the moment you arrive until the curtain falls: walk the red carpet, enjoy jazzy holiday tunes by Ryan Garmoe Trio on the Endless Bridge, snap a festive photo and more. As a heartfelt thank you from us to you, ticket holders will receive a sweet holiday treat as they leave the theater to keep the merry mood going all the way home.

We’re bookending our matinee performance of A Christmas Carol on Saturday, November 15 with all kinds of merriment — and you’re invited to join us! Before the show from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., bring the whole family to the Guthrie for a festive extravaganza on Level Five, featuring winter crafts, live music on the Endless Bridge, holiday stories, a photobooth and tasty treats compliments of Kowalski’s.

Then stay after the show for a special panel discussion with Guthrie artists and staff who will uncover some of the little-known secrets behind our beloved holiday tradition, from Marley’s pulse-pounding arrival to the ethereal entries of all three spirits. The pre-show event is free; tickets are required for the performance and post-play discussion.
