Indígena by Owamni
May 13, 2026
We’re beyond thrilled to welcome Indígena by Owamni to the Guthrie in partnership with Chef Sean Sherman and NATIFS.
This mission-driven, nonprofit collaboration reflects the Guthrie’s deep commitment to our community and to enhancing the vibrancy of the Mississippi riverfront in downtown Minneapolis. We look forward to sharing meals together at this award-winning Indigenous restaurant built around bringing people together.
6 Things to Know About Chef Sean Sherman
- Sherman was born and raised on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, as were his parents and grandparents before him.
- His work as a field surveyor for the forest service provided him with an extensive knowledge of native plants, which later proved invaluable in his menu development.

- In 2021, Sherman opened Owamni — the first North American restaurant using Indigenous cooking techniques. The menu includes no colonial ingredients, such as dairy, wheat flour and cane sugar.
- Owamni won the 2022 James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant. It was also included on USA Today’s 2024 list of best restaurants.
- Sherman’s second cookbook, Turtle Island, has been named one of the best cookbooks of 2025 by The New York Times, The Washington Post and more.
