A musical inspired by true events

At 9:26 a.m. on September 11, 2001, the Federal Aviation Administration shuts down U.S. airspace in response to terrorist attacks, forcing all inbound planes to find alternate destinations. In total, 38 planes are diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, and the hospitable residents of the small Canadian town greet all 7,000 passengers with food, clothing and open hearts. By the time the “plane people” depart, defenses are down, romance blooms and lifelong friendships are formed. Based on the inspiring true story of Gander’s unexpected guests, this hopeful musical honors our common humanity and highlights the importance of reaching out to those in need.

Three things to know

  • The story follows the real-life timeline of airline passengers stranded in Newfoundland, Canada, after 9/11 closed U.S. airspace, from the moment they land in the small town of Gander until the last plane departs.
  • Come From Away deeply resonated with audiences when it premiered on Broadway, receiving seven Tony Award nominations in 2017, including Best Musical.
  • Director Kent Gash returns to the Guthrie after directing the musical Guys and Dolls in our 2018–2019 Season.

Producer spotlight

“When we first saw an earlier production of Come From Away, we were unexpectedly moved by its celebration of human generosity and care; a community of strangers comes together in a way that feels uplifting, intimate and reassuring. It tells a truly affirming story about what’s possible amid unspeakable adversity, quietly yet resoundingly reminding us of the strength found in shared purpose and human connection.

We are so proud of the Guthrie’s production of Come From Away because it feels deeply at home here. What better place than our own community, which has recently come together and endured — indeed, triumphed — in the face of heartbreaking adversity.”
