Somewhere

by MATTHEW LÓPEZ
directed by JOSEPH HAJ
McGuire Proscenium Stage

A dance-filled family portrait

It’s 1959, and the musical West Side Story has captured the hearts of America, including the tight-knit Candelaria family who dreams of making it big in show business: the siblings take acting and dance lessons, mother Inez works as an usher and father Pepe tours as a bandleader. Their aspirations are interrupted by unexpected news — their Manhattan apartment building is being demolished to build Lincoln Center, and they have 30 days to vacate. Filled with humor, music and dance, this heartfelt family drama reveals the power of hope when facing life’s realities.

Three things to know

  • Described by playwright Matthew López as “a play with dance,” Somewhere is inspired by López's family history and filled with choreography, music and movement.
  • Director Joseph Haj will once again collaborate with Choreographer Maija García, who previously worked with Haj on the Guthrie's acclaimed 2018 production of West Side Story. (The play shares its title with the popular song from West Side Story.)
  • López is the first Latino playwright to win a Tony Award for Best Play (The Inheritance). The Guthrie previously produced his play The Legend of Georgia McBride in our 2017–2018 Season.

Producer spotlight

"As longtime lovers of musical theater, what could be more fun than a play about a family enthralled with West Side Story with lots of dancing? We became instant fans of playwright Matthew López after seeing the delightful Guthrie production of The Legend of Georgia McBride in 2018. Our fandom was cemented a few months later by the London production of his emotionally compelling The Inheritance. Now, we are thrilled to be able to support this Joseph Haj-directed production of Somewhere."
